in "insidious" how are demons/spirits present before Dalton goes into the "coma"?

hi,
how are the demons/spirits present before the coma? i mean, the books
fell of the shelf, Dalton sees, what i think is the red-faced demon in
the attic. do you think Josh was already possessed at this point?
also, why do you think Josh was "squirmy" when Elise was talking about
"the further"?
